No July workshop. Please check back or join our mailing list on our “Contact” page to learn about workshops in the following months.

Andrew Hoogvliets, an artist and dyer with over 2 decades of experience, is teaching Intro to Indigo Dyeing & Shibori Techniques at Kate Beck's Alquimie Studio on the first Saturday of the month.

Where: 2701 Chartres St.

When: Saturday, TBD

11 AM - 4 PM

This workshop is for anyone who is interested in learning to use natural indigo dye. No artistic or dyeing experience is required. Come ready to experiment and express your creativity!
Practice fabrics, including a scarf & lunch are included. Participants are encouraged to bring their own natural fiber garments or textiles to dye as well.

You will learn:

• How to dye with indigo. Participants will receive instructions on creating their own indigo vats, and do hands-on dyeing.

• How to discharge (remove) indigo dye.

• Shibori techniques including folding and crunch (also known as arashi).

What you need:

• Please bring a pair of dish washing gloves to prevent staining your hands and wrists.

• Wear comfortable clothes that may become stained, or an apron to wear over your clothing.

• Cotton, linen, or rayon items that you want to dye. T shirts or other shirts, cotton or linen pants (think pajama or beach pants), pillow cases, tea towels, tote bags, etc. are all great for shibori! White or unbleached items allow patterns and indigo color to show up best, but other light colors or lightly patterned items can also look great with added indigo color or shibori patterning.
